[ARCHIVED] City accepting requests for residential LED streetlight shields

In early January, Rocky Mountain Power upgraded Moab streetlights to new code-compliant energy-efficient, downward-facing LED bulbs. The new bulbs emit a warm, white color, and because LED technology differs from the previous lighting fixtures, residents may have noticed a change in the light quality.

At the time of replacement, Rocky Mountain Power recommended a 60-day period to give Moab residents time to adjust to the new lights.

If a new streetlight is shining too brightly into a home, residents can now request a shield to reduce the amount of light coming onto their property. Requests must be submitted by March 6.

“The city selected the lowest available lighting level for neighborhoods and included comfort lenses to make them a better fit for our community,” said Moab Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability Director Alexi Lamm. “Still, some residents may find that the new streetlights are casting more or brighter light on their property. If that’s the case, the light shields can help.”

 How to request a shield:

  • Complete the online form: bit.ly/shieldrequest (or scan the QR code);Streetlight Shield Request Form QR Code
  • Call Moab City Hall: 435-259-5121
  • In Person at Moab City Administration Office, 217 E. Center St.

 Shield requests must include:

  • Property address;
  • Streetlight pole number;
  • Which side of the light should be shielded.

 Rocky Mountain Power plans to install the requested shields, where feasible, later in March.

“I appreciate everyone’s patience as we transition to the new streetlights,” Lamm said.“ Residents who want to reduce light coming onto their property for added comfort are encouraged to request a shield now, while we’re coordinating installation with Rocky Mountain Power.”
