Sustainability Vision
Moab strives to become a thriving, resilient, equitable, and inclusive community, fostering a high quality of life, a healthy environment, and a stable economy. (Moab Sustainability Action Plan 2023)
The rocks, rivers, wildlife, and plants of Moab make this a place so many people want to visit and only a few people get to live. The health of our community and these natural systems are our responsibility in this remarkable place we call home.
- In 2017, the City the City also committed to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2040.
- In 2019, the City updated its 100% renewable electricity goal to 2030, so it could become an anchor community for the Utah Renewable Communities program enabled by House Bill 411.
- In 2023, Moab completed a Sustainability Plan, which identifies goals in the areas of:
- Energy & Buildings
- Nature & Ecosystems
- Land Use & Planning
- Transportation
- Materials Management
- Water
These are just a few of Moab's efforts over the years. Moab has been a Tree City USA since 1993. In 2004, Moab became the nation’s first EPA Green Power Community by exceeding a minimum threshold of voluntary green power purchases. By 2009, the formal scope of Moab’s sustainability had expanded with the adoption of the 2020 Vision: A Sustainable Moab Plan.
In addition to city-wide goals, Moab City is pursuing sustainability within its own operations. Moab City Center is a LEED Silver building, and five city buildings have solar arrays. Over one-third of electricity consumed in city buildings is offset with Blue Sky solar credits. Sustainability is also evident in the City’s General Plan, Water Conservation Plan Update, Unified Transportation Master Plan, and Moab Tomorrow Together Think Tank Report.
