City Streetlight Conversion

Night Sky Light graphic

"Dark Skies” means better light, not less light.

Effective lighting provides visibility where it’s needed but not where it's not. That leads to less light pollution in the sky and targeted light where it's needed on the ground. In upgrading City streetlights to LEDs we will reduce skyglow, light our evening travels, and save energy and money with efficient fixtures.

The City of Moab adopted new lighting standards in 2019 and updated it in 2023. Now, Moab is working toward meeting these standards through retrofits for the decorative lights on Main Street and Rocky Mountain operated streetlights throughout town.

All lighting must be compliant by Jan. 1, 2029. With updated code and retrofits underway, Moab became a Dark Sky Community in 2024.

Streetlight LED Update

To direct light down at the street and save electricity costs, Moab signed a contract with Rocky Mountain Power to replace all of the old lights with dark sky-compliant LEDs.  The first streetlight demo took place in winter of 2022. The new lights were installed in January 2026. These new lights:

  • Point down only
  • Are 3000K in color, the warmest offered by Rocky Mountain Power
  • Are brighter on busy roads, intersections, and crosswalks for safety
  • Are dimmer with comfort lenses in neighborhoods to mitigate overlighting and glare

The period for requesting light shields has ended. Thank you to all the community members who submitted requests.
